Suzanne “Suzy” Starr is a South Dakota native. She graduated from Black Hills State University in with a BS in Business Administration. She also obtained an Associate’s Degree from National American University. Thereafter, she graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1999. After clerking for the South Dakota Supreme Court in 2000, Suzy began practicing in Spearfish, South Dakota with a primary focus on family law until 2010 when she accepted employment with the State of South Dakota, Unified Judicial System in Pierre, South Dakota. There she served as the Director of Policy and Legal Services and in that capacity assisted, managed and/or supervised various statewide committees and programs, including but not limited to the Child Support Referee program, the Commission on Parenting Time Guidelines, the South Dakota Child Support Commissions, the Pro Se Committee and the Rural Attorney Recruitment Program. In 2023, Suzy made the transition back to private practice which is where she feels the most accomplished and professionally gratified.

Suzy’s practice can be characterized as a general practice with a heavy emphasis on family law issues. She is admitted to practice in all South Dakota state courts as well as the Federal Court for the District of South Dakota. She has been a continuous member of the South Dakota Bar Association since 2000 and has previously served as a Commissioner for the State Bar.

Suzy is passionate about helping people and non-profit organizations. One entity that she has enjoyed immensely is the South Dakota Teen Court program where she has volunteered numerous hours as a board member, volunteer Judge, and facilitator for some of their classes. She has also served as a foster parent and has been very grateful for that unique perspective.

All of these experiences, professional and personal, have contributed to Suzy’s ability to assist clients in reaching resolutions that best fit their needs.
